Under Armour Command 2 Lacrosse Head Review

A stiff, narrow, full-offset attack head that rips from distance and feeds on the run. Here's how the UA Command 2 held up after three months on the field.

LaxDrip verdict: a durable, stiff attack head with great range and feeding accuracy. It's a pain to string and slow to break in, and it's no faceoff head.

The Under Armour Command 2 is the next step in UA's Command line. UA kept the all-weather nylon and the same overall design, but they keep finding ways to make it better each time.

Still, for all the hype it got from college attackmen and middies at the UA All-America games, the reviews on how it actually plays were mixed. A lot of players felt the update was more cosmetic than performance.

So I took it to the field myself to give you every detail you need before you buy it.

BattleLax pick: BattleLax doesn't carry Under Armour heads. The closest match they stock is the Warrior Evo V Unstrung Head ($99.99), another stiff, full-offset head built for attack and offensive middies at the same price point. I've listed more alternatives at BattleLax below.

Who's This Head Made For?

Under Armour launched the Command 2 in 2018. It keeps a design close to the original Command but weighs only about 4.8 ounces.

It's light, but you don't give up any stiffness or durability. It's built from all-weather nylon with the Glide+ scoop, and it quickly caught on with college attackmen and offensive middies.

The design updates include a little UA jewel on the throat, extra texture through the sidewalls and fins on the back.

So let's see if the scooping, catching and shooting accuracy of the updated Command 2 are worth $90 for an aggressive offensive player.

Accuracy of Shot and Pass

The Command 2 has the same three-strut design, face shape and full offset as the OG Command. It has a narrow profile with a vertical throat and not much pinch in the middle, and that gave me a really balanced shot from distance.

Under Armour Command 2 scoop

The Command 2's Glide+ scoop.

My shot speed dropped a touch compared to the OG Command since the head is lighter, but my feeding got better. I was hitting very accurate, crisp feeds while running and dodging defenders.

The 18 sidewall holes let me string it with a mid pocket, but UA changed the hole pattern.

The first two holes are smaller than on the OG head, while the third hole up top is wider. That made it easy to run a sidewall string and a shooter through it.

Some of the guys I play with struggled to string it, though. If you're buying this head and you're not a stringer, plan on getting it strung by someone who knows the pattern.

Catching and Cradling

The Command 2 has a shorter throat with the new UA jewel. That let me keep my top hand closer to the head for a more secure grip, and I felt in full control catching and cradling.

The sidewalls are stiff, though. That stiffness made it hard to pinch the ball in tight spots, and I had some trouble on loose balls during fast breaks.

The rounded scoop and balanced mid pocket kept the ball secure while I was cradling on the run. I didn't get any unwanted bounces or wobbles.

Honestly, I found the fins on the back of the head pretty pointless. Maybe they help a little on ground balls.

So if you're willing to trade flex for stiffness, the Command 2 is an ideal attack head with impressive strength and durability. If not, go with the STX Stallion 900 or the Nike CEO 3, or pick up the StringKing Mark 3A ($119.99) at BattleLax.

Checking

UA cut the weight on the Command 2 but made it stiffer, so it's very responsive on the field and tougher too.

The solid sidewalls deliver powerful checks and can pop a ground ball right out of an opponent's pocket. I loved the strength and durability. The chunky sidewall pattern and three struts soaked up the impact of collisions, so I barely felt them.

There was very little wear and tear after three months. The textured, rounded face has a raised build that protects the top string at the lip. I strung it with a 7-9 diamond pattern, and the top string never got chewed up, which happens a lot on other heads.

So if you're an attackman or an offensive middie, the Command 2 is a solid option. FOGOs who want flex over stiffness should look at a dedicated faceoff head like the StringKing Mark 2F ($99.99) or the ECD Weapon X, which BattleLax carries as the ECD Weapon X 2.0 ($99.99). Ground Ball Pickup

The Command 2 keeps the Glide+ scoop that helped make its predecessors some of the best heads in the game on ground balls.

Under Armour Command 2 scoop detail

The rounded scoop with indented top string holes.

The scoop is rounded, with indents for the top string holes. That protected the top string from getting torn up and let me pick ground balls clean without chunking the turf.

The all-weather nylon and stiff design resist warping, but you don't get much flex. The pocket felt stiff at first and took a while to break in. Between the minimal flex and the narrow face, it's not a great pick for faceoff middies.

Coach's note: I've seen it from box floors in Ontario to spring ball in upstate New York and summer leagues in Virginia Beach: a stiff head like this rewards kids with good hands and punishes lazy ones. Do your wall ball, break the pocket in before game day, and it'll pay you back with a head that holds its shape for years.

People also ask

What are the key features of the Under Armour Command 2 lacrosse head?

A narrow face, full offset, Glide+ scoop, all-weather nylon and a rigid rail design, all at about 4.8 oz. It's stiff and light, and it suits attack and offensive midfield.

How does the Under Armour Command 2 perform on ground balls?

Very well. The rounded Glide+ scoop guides the ball in from any angle and protects the top string, so you can pick it clean without chunking the turf.

Is the Under Armour Command 2 lacrosse head good for faceoffs?

No. It's too stiff for faceoffs. FOGOs should look at a dedicated faceoff head like the StringKing Mark 2F or ECD Weapon X 2.0.

What level of players is the Under Armour Command 2 suitable for?

Intermediate and advanced players, plus advanced beginners who don't mind a stiff head. It was built to NCAA and NFHS specs, but check your league's current rulebook, since older heads can fall out of compliance when the rules change.

What are the pros and cons of the Under Armour Command 2?

The pros are durability, good long-range shooting and value for money. The cons are a tricky stringing process, less flexibility and a long break-in period.

Final Verdict

The Under Armour Command 2 is a light attack head with great shot speed and catches well on the run. It has a stiff, sturdy build, and the narrow design and Glide+ scoop pick up ground balls smoothly.

The stringing pattern is unusual and the pocket doesn't give much, but it's a versatile head that works for attack and every style of offensive middie. If you're stringing it yourself, the Stringers Society tutorials are a good place to start, and BattleLax has the StringKing Type 5x mesh and string kit ($39.99) to set it up.
